Turnkey pool construction & renovation in Altea

Altea is known for its white old town, crowned by the blue-tiled domes of its church and looking over a wide bay towards the Peñón de Ifach and Benidorm. Around it, villas climb the foothills of the Sierra de Altea and Bernia, and the gated hillside of Altea Hills rises steeply towards Mascarat.
Here the slope is often the defining feature of a plot. Views are panoramic, terraces are narrow and long, and every metre of flat ground has usually been built. Solmarea Pools studies the plot, designs the pool with you, prepares the budget and manages the works through to handover, coordinating the builders, installers and specialists each stage needs. You have one point of contact throughout.

Building on steep ground
Altea Hills is one of the steepest residential areas on the Costa Blanca, and many plots in the Sierra de Altea and around Mascarat share that character. A pool here usually sits on a terrace created or extended with retaining walls, and its structure must handle the load of water on a slope.
That has practical consequences. We need a clear view of the ground, existing walls and drainage before proposing a solution. Machinery may be limited by narrow, winding access roads and gated entrances, and concrete may need to be pumped over a distance. Some projects call for a geotechnical study or structural calculations, which we arrange and coordinate with the engineer as part of the project.
When you contact us, a few photos of the plot from above and below, and of the access road, help us understand the challenge and prepare our site visit.
Framing the bay
From most of Altea's hillsides the view takes in the whole bay, from the old town to the Sierra Helada. An infinity or overflow edge facing the sea can make the water appear to continue into the bay, and it is a frequent request in Altea Hills. It is also one of the more technical choices: it needs a catch basin, a balance tank, accurate levels and a wall that looks good from below.
On narrower terraces, a long, slim lap pool or a compact plunge pool with a generous stone deck can work better than a large basin. Interior colour matters too. Pale sand or grey finishes give softer, more natural water that sits well against white walls and the dry, rocky landscape.
Read more about the design and technical side of infinity pools before we start shaping the options together.
Old town character and established villas
Closer to the old town and around Altea la Vella and Cap Negret, houses are often older, with whitewashed walls, blue window frames, tiled terraces and gardens enclosed by stone walls. Pools in these homes tend to be smaller and set into the garden, and renovations need to respect that character.
Common requests include:
- Re-lining an older pool in a finish that suits traditional architecture, such as handmade-look tiles or natural stone coping
- Replacing worn steps and adding a bench or shallow area
- Updating filtration and pumps in a cramped or buried plant room
- Adding a heat pump and cover to use the pool beyond the summer months
- Improving the terrace with shade, lighting and planting
For older pools, we start by checking the shell for leaks and the condition of the pipework during our site visit. That inspection and our detailed budget, not an online estimate, set the real scope.
Licences and nearby areas
New pools and structural changes to existing ones normally require permission from the Ajuntament d'Altea. The town hall sets the licence requirements; we confirm which documents apply and coordinate the application with the architect or technical professional required. On steep plots near the sierra, it is worth checking early whether slope, landscape or retaining-wall criteria affect what you can build.
Many owners in Altea Hills and the sierra spend part of the year elsewhere. If that is your case, we manage the project while you are away and report progress with photos, videos and direct contact, in the language you prefer.
We also take on projects in neighbouring areas with similar terrain, such as the hillside developments of Finestrat and Sierra Cortina above Benidorm, as well as Calpe to the north. The approach is the same: understand the plot first, then design and manage the pool from start to finish.

Questions about pools in Altea
Is building a pool in Altea Hills more complex than elsewhere?
Often, because of the steep slopes. Retaining walls, structural calculations and limited access for machinery are common. We visit the plot before preparing a realistic design and budget.
What pool suits a narrow terrace with a sea view in Altea?
A long, slim lap pool or a compact plunge pool with a stone deck often suits narrow terraces better than a large basin. An overflow edge can frame the bay but adds technical complexity. We advise after seeing the site.
Can an older pool near the old town be renovated without changing its character?
Yes. Finishes, coping and terrace materials can be chosen to match traditional white architecture, while the equipment is modernised out of sight. We inspect the shell and pipework first.
